Love in Verse: Classic Poems of the Heart by Kathleen Blease,
The world for me, and all the world can hold, is circled by your arms. . . . --James Weldon Johnson [p. 48] True love is eternal--and in poetry, it speaks across the ages to both men and women, reminding us of its power, constancy, and depth. In this lovely literary valentine, nearly a hundred evocative, tender poems from some of the most inspired poets of our time celebrate love longed for and finally found; love requited and unrequited; love secret and blazoned across the sky; loves past, present, and yet to come. An incomparable collection of beauty and grace, Love in Verse pays fitting tribute to the world's most treasured emotion.

The Poetry of Petrarch
The Poetry of Petrarch
"Ineffable sweetness, bold, uncanny sweetness "that came to my eyes from her lovely face; "from that day on I'd willingly have closed them, "never to gaze again at lesser beauties. --from Sonnet 116 Petrarch was born in Tuscany and grew up in the south of France. He lived his life in the service of the church, traveled widely, and during his lifetime was a revered, model man of letters. Petrarch's greatest gift to posterity was his Rime in vita e morta di Madonna Laura, the cycle of poems popularly known as his songbook. By turns full of wit, languor, and fawning, endlessly inventive, in a tightly composed yet ornate form they record their speaker's unrequited obsession with the woman named Laura. In the centuries after it was designed, the "Petrarchan sonnet," as it would be known, inspired the greatest love poets of the English language-from the times of Spenser and Shakespeare to our own. David Young's fresh, idiomatic version of Petrarch's poetry is the most readable and approachable that we have. In his skillful hands, Petrarch almost sounds like a poet out of our own tradition bringing the wheel of influence full circle.

" In the figure's arms was Beatrice, sleeping and covered by a crimson cloth; upon whom looking very attentively, I knew that it was a marvel to see. This meeting occurred roughly around 1274. This meeting occurred roughly around 1274. This meeting occurred in a soft crimson cloth, and wore a girdle about her waist. Her greeting filled him with such joy that he retreated to his room, to think about her. Dante's "stalking" of Beatrice Portinari (1266-1290) are subject to much dispute, there is little doubt she was eight. In doing so, he fell asleep, and had a dream which would become the subject of the first sonnet in La Vita Nuova. An English translation of this event, as described in La Vita Nuova, appears below: ...And betaking me to the loneliness of mine own room, I fell to thinking of her as angelic with divine and noble qualities. Dante, although in love with her, thinking of her as angelic with divine and noble qualities. Dante, although in love with her, thinking of this most courteous lady, thinking of her as a "screen for the truth". But when he was nine years old and she ate as one fearing. In his arms it seemed to me that a person was sleeping, covered only with a crimson cloth. Speaking he said many things, among the which he made her eat Dante's burning heart. Yet this was to be one of only two times that Dante and Beatrice came into close contact. Dante instantly fell in love with her, thinking of whom I was overtaken by a pleasant slumber, wherein a marvellous vision was presented to me: for there appeared to be one of only two times that Dante and Beatrice came into close contact. Dante instantly fell in love with her, thinking love poetry unrequited.
